In 2009, we were living in San Diego for a year while my husband completed his last year of training. I moved my business into a spare bedroom in our temporary apartment and made the best of what would be a year away from the comfort of friends and family. I saw it as a year to explore a new city and live in the Southern California sunshine while I still had the flexibility to do so. This was still the early days of Oh Joy, and I was mostly doing lots of freelance design work and design writing as my main source of income. This was before Oh Joy could stand on it’s own as a brand and before I began launching products and books. My business was mainly me as a service—a graphic designer to clients.
By this point, I was well-versed on getting clients and pricing my work. I knew when to increase my rates and how to write a contract. I knew how to get jobs done and have happy clients.
